Leah also has tips for expert self-tanner application:
Feet and Hands
Moisture in advance to preempt overdarkening.on your ankles and knuckles. Coat finger/toenails with Vaseline to avoid stain. Always scrub palms afterward.
Knees and Elbows
These are naturally darker areas, so they pick up the color more intensely. Sloughing and extra moisturizing the day before will help. Use a gentle pumice.
Shoulders and Back
No partner? Buy a long-handled foam sponge to reach your back. This is a good time to use TINTED formulas so you can see what’s happening.
Hairline
Go all the way up to the border to avoid a pale halo. After applying to your face, blend into the roots with a makeup sponge. If you have light hair, dab conditioner around edges first. Same holds true for brows — guard with Vaseline.
Common Questions:
Q: How to select a shade? “Light,” “medium,” “dark” — do you choose what your skin tone is or what you hope it will be?
A: You should buy for the end result you hope to have. Keep in mind how “natural” you want to look. Also, when you’re buying a product, it ultimately comes down to personal preference. Do you like creams, sprays or gels? The ingredients are similar so it’s all about the consistency and shade.
Q: I applied it last night and when I woke up this AM, I found a massive streak across my inner arm! What do I do?
A: Hop in the shower and start exfoliating the area. If it needs major help, use a topical chemical peel and follow the directions, which that takes off the top layers of skin. If there’s still a mark, or you don’t have time to deal with it, use concealer.
Q: How long will this last?
A: Most products will last 3-4 days. To make it truly last: moisturize! Also, don’t take extra showers and definitely don’t exfoliate.
